Frequently Asked Questions

VIN - Vehicle Identification Number

1. What is a VIN?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is issued to a vehicle manufactured on or after 1 January 1989. It is unique and 17 characters in length.

2. Where do I find the VIN?
VIN numbers can be found on plates riveted to the chassis or frame, stamped into the chassis or firewall and / or etched on the bottom corner of the front windscreen, and also on the vehicle's compliance plate. If you are unable to locate the VIN, you may present the vehicle to a mechanic / garage or vehicle owner to locate the VIN or the vehicle's manual.

3. Can I get a Vcheck on a vehicle manufactured prior to 1 January 1989?
No, Vcheck is only available for vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 1989.

4. Can a VIN have more than or less than 17 characters?
No, a VIN always has 17 characters. It is an alpha / numeric combination that is located on the body of the vehicle.

5. Can you confirm the VIN?
We are unable to confirm the VIN, you will need to contact the registered operator / motor dealership to verify the VIN.

Vehicle Details

1. What if the vehicle details returned do not match the vehicle I'm wishing to purchase?
You will need to reconfirm the details to ensure that you have the correct VIN. If it is still not correct, you will need to recheck the VIN. If you have checked the accuracy of the VIN and the details are still incorrect, you should present the vehicle and / or details to the Queensland Police Service for investigation.

2. I can't get the Vcheck that I want.
There are 3 combinations of unavailability. They are:
1. If both Vcheck plus and Vcheck premium are unavailable. This means the REVS check is unavailable. Information is sourced from the Department of Tourism, Fair Trading and Wine Industry Development and is only available 7am-8pm Mon-Sat and 8am-8pm Sun.
2. If both Vcheck history and Vcheck premium are unavailable. This is due to the vehicle not being registered in Queensland.
3. If Vcheck plus, Vcheck history and Vcheck premium are all unavailable. This means that the REVS check is unavailable and the vehicle is registered interstate.

3. Why does my odometer reading appear to be inconsistent?
Vcheck extracts the odometer reading provided to Queensland Transport at the time of initial or transfer of the vehicle registration. As this information is provided by individuals and industry at the time of lodgement of application, some irregularities or discrepancies may occur.

4. What does the "purpose of use" mean?
The purpose of use indicates the purpose for which the vehicle has been registered (ie. private, commercial)

5. The engine number on the vehicle and Vcheck do not match.
A change of engine number may have occurred and Queensland Transport has not been notified.

6. The vehicle's history I am seeking is for longer than the history provided.
A complete history may not be available prior to 1999 due to Queensland Transport system changes.

Statutory or Repairable Write-Off

1. The vehicle is recorded as a statutory write-off - what do I do?
A statutory write-off is a vehicle that is too badly damaged to be repaired to a standard that is safe for road use; therefore the vehicle cannot be re-registered in Queensland.

2. The vehicle is recorded as a repairable write-off - what do I do?
A repairable write-off is a vehicle that has been assessed as uneconomical to repair. The vehicle will only be re-registered if it repaired and passes a Safety Certificate and Written-off Vehicle Inspection. For further information regarding repairable write-offs contact Queensland Inspection Services on 1300 722 411.

3. Am I able to find out what sort of damage the vehicle has sustained (ie. Impact, fire etc)?
No. The current Queensland legislation (Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Registration) Regulation 1999) prevents Queensland Transport from releasing details regarding the damage sustained to a vehicle. However, an additional warning message will now appear on the reports relating to water damaged vehicles recorded under WOVC. It will now alert the customer to the fact that it has been recorded as water damaged and they may wish to have the vehicle inspected.

4. The vehicle displays no written-off status but in the history there is an "add write-off" recorded.
A vehicle that is currently not recorded as a write-off may have been recorded as a repairable write-off in the past and subsequently passed a written-off vehicle inspection. This will display in the history as "add write-off".

5. Could you tell me if this chassis number has been written-off or not?
No, Vcheck is not available for vehicles that only have chassis numbers as identifiers.

Stolen Status

1. The Vcheck I purchased shows the vehicle is recorded as stolen or has a stolen engine - what do I do?
You will need to contact the Queensland Police Service to further investigate the situation.

Interstate Information

1. Where do I obtain information about an interstate vehicle - including it's history?
You will need to contact the registration authority in the state in which the vehicle is currently or previously registered.

2. Why can't I get history information on an interstate vehicle?
Vcheck does not access historical information for vehicles registered interstate.

Postcode

1. What is the relevance of including a postcode on the Vcheck history and Vcheck premium?
The postcode provides a history of the locations at which the vehicle has been or is garaged.

Certificate

1. Why isn't a certificate displayed when I clicked on a transaction in the history page?
Certificates are in PDF format which will need a Acrobat Reader to view. Make sure you have Acrobat Reader installed or download from http://www.adobe.com.
